OVERVIEW

Camping provides many different health benefits ranging from stress reduction to building relationships. Historically in the U.S., this activity has been targeted towards white people and is often reflected that way in media. With this project, I aim to break down the barriers surrounding camping and make it more easily accessible to people of color.

I started this two semester long project doing in depth research that highlights these barriers and discovers key insights. From that research, I developed “Adventurous Allies:” a three tier system about camping encompassing outreach, education, and support made for people of color. The program supplies the tools and resources that are needed to teach and provide opportunities for camping. Due to the scale of my plan for the project, I focused on “Tier 1: Outreach” so that I could fully explore and develop that element of this system.
